Starting from simple sealing requirements, the lubricated stern shaft sealing device has now evolved to meet the standards of mechanical seals. For previously used sealing devices, we explore how to retrofit and adapt them to meet the sealing requirements of modern stern shaft sealing systems.
Traditional stern shaft oil sealing devices can generally be divided into three subsystems: the aft seal oil system, the stern bearing lubrication system, and the forward stern seal oil system. When oil leakage into the sea or seawater ingress occurs in the aft seal oil system, compressed air is introduced into the piping of the aft stern seal oil system. This transforms the aft seal oil chamber into a sealed air chamber. The air pressure within the chamber is then adjusted according to the vessel’s ballast or loaded condition, ensuring that the air-seal pressure is always greater than the seawater pressure outside the stern shaft seal. In this way, only compressed air is expelled outward, preventing seawater from entering. This effectively isolates the external seawater from the lubricating oil in the stern shaft bearing chamber, thereby achieving the sealing and leakage-prevention purpose of the stern shaft sealing device.
